Under Great Lake Skies with Stel
2 days of steel 02/05/2010

Had to make a trip north to take care of some business at work. Decided it would be appropriate to take my center pin along. The weather looked like it was going to be nice.

After I had completed what I needed to get done I headed west to stay with my buddy Sam and his girlfriend.

I woke up to this amazing view:

In the morning I would head to the river in search of some steel.

Image

Hit some of my promising holes without much luck. Switched back and fourth between spawn and waxies. Finally I had a bobber down in a spot that doesn't receive much pressure and landed a nice size skipper. Felt good to be fighting a fish again.

Image

I fished a little bit more but had to pack it up to go see another buddy I haven't seen in awhile. He just got back from cleaning up on the smelt and I couldn't pass up the invitation on a fish fry.

The next morning I headed to another river I love to fish. I was able to fish in solitude which was really nice. I only seen 3 guys on my side all day.

Right away I hooked up on chartreuse spawn but my leader broke. Probably should have changed it after fishing all day the day before.

I hit some other holes but fishing was pretty slow. Around 3:30 it lit up and I started catching trout after trout. THey really like a white jig with a pink eye with 2-3 waxies. Usually I don't take to many pictures of smaller trout while steelhead fishing but had to pull out the camera on this beautiful fish.

Image

I also caught this acrobatic skipper which out up a nice fight for it's size.

I did hook another steelhead that went ballistics but unfor. for me he got off.

The highlight of my trip was catching probably my biggest resident brown.

It was a great day on the river and I can't wait to get back. The trout were really on. I think I caught like 8 bows and 7 browns, 1 skipper, a bunch of smolts and 0-2 on adults. It was great seeing friends. I can't thank Sam enough for letting me stay at his place.

Blog update 02/01/2010

Hello,
I have been very busy with life and other things. I have been trying to change up the website a little. I also have been learning how to get videos from my HD camera on here for all to see. When that happens, 95% of my videos will be in HD format.

I also filmed my cousins wedding back on December 26th. It was a learning experience for me. As soon as I get a cord that will allow me to transfer the videos i'll be working on that and then continue to update this website.

I have lots of updates to do. I have been traveling all around the country in search of big game and fish. I plan on writing about all the trips when I get some time and posting pictures.

As soon as the majority of this stuff is done i'll be fishing and hunting like a mad man. I put in for a turkey license and if I get one I'll be going into the woods in search of gobblers. I can't wait!

Hope everyone is having a successful New Year!

When the salmon come, so do the people. The key to catching these fish are getting there when no one is around and running skein under a bobber. If you do it any other way will result in snagged or tons of lined fish.

I have had a tradition of mine that I always go fishing the last day of the year. It's probably been 6-7 years I have been doing this.

My plans were to visit friends for New Years Eve. I  hadn't seen 2 of them in a very long time. In the afternoons I plan to fish one of my favorite rivers. The reports were good till I got there. Go figure, right?

My first day I fish hard. I covered a lot of water with spawn. Nothing wanted to bite so I went home skunked.

Today is the last day of the year.  After yesterday skunk I wasn't really excited to get down to the river. I took my time and got down there around 3:45. I fish hard again, but also received the skunk. I ran into one of the locals and she said the fishing has been horrible.

Oh well, hopefully the new year will bring steelies like this one that I got back on NYE 05:

Been trying to get out steelheading the past few days but when ever I decide to go I realize I just don't have the time. The other day I tried to hit a NE river but realize I had not bought gear for steelheading and my stuff was spread all over from salmon season. Today I decided to drop everything I was doing and hit the river for a few with what ever I could grabbed. I seriously need to regroup all my steelhead gear. From what I heard the fishing had been pretty slow, but that was not going to stop me.

First thing I had to do was rig up my center pin and tie up some spawn. I was excited to fish with my center pin because my buddy Luke's dad had been working on my float rod and I just got it back. He did amazing work and I really appreciate it.  3:45 I was finally on the stream for the first time in a long time. It was nice to cast out for the first time. Nothing was really cooperating til the last hole I hit.

I finally had a bobber down towards the end of the drift and the fish went to take off and threw the hook. I was bummed out but happy to of hooked something. A few cast later I turned my head and looked back and the bobber was gone. I set the hook and felt a huge thud and that was gone. I guess I am a little rusty but do you do. I made a few more drifts and then moved on to the next hole. Made a few cast there and called it a day. I love it when you come back to the truck and it's a empty parking lot.

Headed up to try and get a deer tomarrow and then will hopefully be back at it sometime next week before it's time to head back to work.

Hello,
Just thought I would throw up a quick up date of why I haven't been posting anything new on here. Since fall has begun I have been very busy working. Not that working is taking away from my outdoor concidering I work in the outdoor everyday. I just have had no time to post anything here. I have been all over North America and have taken some sweet videos and pictures. As soon as the fall season is over and there is some down time I plan on updating this on what I have been up to, and what has been keeping me so dang busy.

I also plan on re-doing the site, putting more and better clips on here for all to see. Please stick around!

Thanks,
Dan

Nov. 10th Chris told me I had til the 16th off. I was pretty excited because I always have a lot of success on this week. I decided to hunt around the ranch and in the morning hit up some of my old hunting grounds and scout for the highly anticipated November 15th gun opener. I was deer hunting within minutes on the property. Didn't see a deer but wasn't expecting much.

Nov. 11th took my climber to a spot where I shot my first buck last year. Sat in it all afternoon and to my surprise didn't see a single deer.

Nov. 12th I sat in a area I had alot of success in last year. It was swampy marsh area. Right away had a few does underneath me. Thought about taking one to fill my archery tag but decided to wait.  I still have several days to shoot a buck. Ended up seeing 6 does all togather all day. Didn't see anything after 10:30. Didn't appreciate the jeep driving down the two track that I didn't know had public access to it 3 times. That might have had something to do with not seeing any deer in the afternoon.

Nov. 13th I put a stand up in a deer that was good to me before. Was going to sit somewhere else but got out of the woods to late. Decided to sit in that stand. Ended up not seeing anything.

Nov. 14th seen 35 deer on state land from 10:30 til 3:30. The bucks were really chasing the does. Nothing in the early hours or late hours of the day.

Nov. 15th I had to go to another county on opening day because that is where my doe permit was for. Took a gamble and used other hunters to my advantage by walking a little farther into the woods and using hunters to push deer towards me. I had deer being pushed all over before light and had deer walking the property line. Finally around 8:10 this doe pop out on my side and I let her have it. Ran about 50 yards and took a dirt nap. I couldn't contain myself from letting out a yahooooo. If I had more time I might of passed her up because I only had one day to rifle hunt. Around 10 while we were taking pics, and tagging her, and gutting her we had deer all over us. Oh well...it was a great opening day for me because this my first deer I ever shot on opening day of any season.

Been super busy working and trying to get my share of the outdoors still. Was fishing a NW river last week and my final fish was a real nice king. Best bait was skein under a bobber. Fishing was kinda slow til the last day. 26 lbs on the scale. The girth times length scale says its 28.66. Who to believe. Here he is:

I had to drive up to a meeting in Northern Michigan for a day. I grabbed my fishing rods "just in case." While there I got a pretty good report from my buddy Jon. I figured another hour drive was no big deal so I headed up.

I showed up to crowds of people. On my second cast with an egg fly I hooked up but the fish quickly got off after a brief battle. I then had a dude cast over my line when I wasn't watching. When I felt the lines hit, it felt like a hit and I set the hook. Of coarse the line tangled. The dude then yelled at me to "learn how to fish." The guy next to him said "this is nothing yet." They then didn't even bothered trying to untangle the lines and took the scissors to them. I wasn't to happy. They glared me down the rest of the time we were fishing.

Very few fish were hooked from 6-11.

3:30 in the morning found me and Jon racing to the river in hopes that the high water brought in some fish. It was pretty slow til about sunrise. It picked up a little, but not much. I switched over to choker size spawn bags but couldn't keep them buttoned.

Around 8 I decided it was time to head home. I was basically getting home and then heading to MO. I knew of a spot that AS and I found last fall. AS had been catching some skams there so I figured what the heck. Unlike the first spot I was the only one there. I tied on a blue/silver hot n tot. My 4-5 cast I got slammed and was into a battle. After a few minutes I pulled in this dark buck.

I had one other hit which I think was a skam. I chucked some more hardware but never hooked up again. I packed up and made the drive home. Unpacked, packed up again and now were sitting in a hotel in Illinois. Hopefully i'll get into some good fishing in Table Rock lake or the White river. If anyone has even been down there, let me know.

That's the end of my Aug. fishing for kings. I wont' be back in Michigan until the 9th of September and will be fishing for kings for 7 days. Can't wait!
